I've listened to he whole discography of After Forever and they're just not my thing. First thing that puts me off this band are the growls, I cannot stand those as they ruin everything wherever they are. I know people now will start saying what a deep meaning growling has against clear vocals and all that but I don't see it. Growling is not welcome in the music I like. Putting that aside, I do have a few songs (four to be precise) by AF in my music library and they're great. I really love the musical composition of "Estranged" and "Face Your Demons" is really good lyrically. All in all, I can't say that After Forever is a bad band, just not something to satisfy my taste. I'm not really familiar with too much of Epica's stuff. Everyone seems to love them, so I might just have to dedicate some time to listen to all their songs and see whether they're any good or not, so I'll get back to you when I do

I LOVE After Forever (yes, that was an understatement). I love all their albums, but I find the older ones a bit more 'gothic' than the others. My Fave album of theirs is Invisible Circles Of their self-titled album I really love 'Dreamflight'; that song has just everything AF stands for these days. LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Epica... well... I kind of have a love/hate thing going on with that band. I was absolutely appalled by their debut album; I bought that one because many reviews said it was like WT, AF and great stuff combined and, well, the reviews were a load of bullcrap in my opinion. The one exception is 'Cry For The Moon', but the rest of the songs don't appeal to me at all. Consign to Oblivion was much better, especially the title track, but the songs did seem to lack a certain dynamic element. I like The Divine Conspiracy the most because it's so much darker and complex than their previous albums. There's many good songs on that disc and I think their hiring Ariƫn van Weesenbeek has been a good decision. Epica sounds MUCH better now.

I love Sander grunts especially in "De-energized" and "Withering time"!My favourite album is the last one.Best songs from this album for me: Withering time - I especially like fast moment, arghhhh!!! De-energized - Jeff Waters's solos are cool! Dreamflight - it's so fantastic! Transitory - drive!!! Lonely Album is excellent - 5/5. I also like "Decipher" and "Prison of desire" for their mystic atmosphere and "Invisible circles" too. These four albums in my album TOP 10.Floor is one of my favourite singers.

Oh yes, 'Transitory'... that song is so great. Crazy Joost... Sander's grunts are okay. I don't find them bringing down the songs. They're quite well-distributed in their material and they do seem to fit in with the lyrics and atmos. Floor's really developed her voice over the years. It sounds much more versatile nowadays. I hope she'll do an opera-style solo album; there's really too little straight-on opera yodeling in their songs. I was glad she did lots of that on the new Ayreon album

Both are great bands, in my opinion. AF has really grown the last few albums, and Epica as well. Epica was described well by Nien, yes. Crap debut, better second album, absolute grandness on the third.

Floor's probably the most masculine female singer in metal I've ever seen. I mean there's no feminine warmth in her whatsoever, her dress sense doesn't help either. And she needs to lose that ridiculous nose ring too, she's not a bull in corrida. Can't say anything negative about her vocal abilities though. The end

i don't think she needs to dress well to be noticed anyway... i remember her doing a song live whilst wearing half a sleeping bag.
